Not to be confused with the Americanized version on CBS, the ITV-produced Love Island has been praised and criticized for its no-rules format that keeps all the inhabitants on edge (and has resulted in suicides of two former cast members and a former host). The format is familiar enough: Sexy singles spend all summer cavorting in a luxury villa in Mallorca, and eventually one lucky couple wins the big cash prize. Though very pop-British, Love Island’s lack of structure and backstage manipulation make for unsettlingly bingeable drama.
